CHINAS ACCESSION to membership of the World Trade Organisation in December 2001 compels it to act to protect intellectal property (IP). But China is still said to account for 70 per cent of the world's counterfeit goods. This is a serious matter for consumers as well as manufacturers. The counterfeits on offer range from fake Pierre Cardin goods and Zippo lighters to birth-control pills. Zippo, of Pennsylvania. US, believes Chinese counterfeit lighters cost one job for every 20,000 counterfeits.
