In this paper, the development of a piezoelectric linear motor driven by impulse force generated by piezoelectric stacks is presented. A prototype of the motor was fabricated, tested and proved to be a promising actuator. In particular, to investigate the design more systematically and deeply, a mathematical model for the linear motor system was developed. Dynamic simulation of the system was carried out to study the performance of the linear motor. The effects of various design parameters on the performance of the system were studied systematically. The dynamic model of the system was verified by some experimental results obtained from the prototyped motor.
