In view of the enormous amount of backwater stretches which in principle could be potential aquaculture grounds in tropical coastal India, there has been a growing interest to map suitable locations for brackish-water fish culture. The interest has also grown stronger in the recent days with the launch of India's own remote sensing satellite which has capabilities on par with Landsat. This attempt envisages to explain remote sensing methods of mapping coastal aquaculture areas using the inexpensive data of Indian Remote Sensing satellite#x2014;IRS-1 A.
