Programs for monitoring groundwater quality are essential tools for helping to ensure the provision of safe drinking water. In rural areas groundwater sources generally are not assesssed as extensively as in larger centres. There appears to be a growing trend for economic constraints to reduce significantly the frequency and number of chemical contaminants analyses. In addition, there is a need for microbial parameters to be more closely monitored. In this paper we provide a perspective on the analytical programs in rural regions of the Canadian Prairies and compare them to those of rural regions in the United States and Australia/New Zealand.
