As a native of Cleburne, Texas, and a young dairy farmer, A J High always had a desire to fly. After taking his first steps joyriding in barnstorming airplanes late in the Thirties, he successfully completed his first solo flight in 1941 in a Piper Cub. While volunteering with the US Army Air Corps during World War Ⅱ, he was at the control of many aircraft including the North American B-25 Mitchell for the 73rd Bomb Squadron, and was involved in the Aleutian Island Campaign of 1942, also known as the 'Forgotten Battle'. Achieving the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, he completed his military flying career in the field of flight testing.
