In September 1999, the Department of Geomatic Engineering at University College London will introduce a new MSc in Hydrographic Surveying, in partnership with the Port of London Authority. The aim of this article is to explain some of the reasons for setting up this course, and to describe how the joint venture between the two organisations came about. In particular, we are interested in examining the ways in which a department long renowned for its land surveying activities came to be involved in the hydrographic branch of surveying, and to explore the links between the different disciplines that have been brought about by an increasing commonality of technology.
