This is IBRU's second publication on the Spratly Islands. The first — "A geographical description of the Spratly Islands and an account of Hydrographic Surveys amongst those Islands" - was reviewed in the July 1996 edition of 'The Hydrographic Journal'. This later volume addresses the dispute itself in terms of the conflicting claims to sovereignty and jurisdiction over the islands and their surrounding waters. As such it might be thought to be of less interest to surveyors other than those of our number who specialize in maritime boundary delimitation. For them, certainly, this must be the most intractable of all cases they might be called upon to consider.
