Almost throughout its 32-year history, from 1947 to 1979, Air Ceylon—the original flag-carrier of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka)—operated with managerial and technical assistance supplied by a succession of overseas airlines (Airways, August 1998). Its first experience of turbine power was gained with a Lockheed 188 Electra wet-leased from KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. After the agreement with KLM ended, a pool partnership with BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation), beginning in 1962, saw Air Ceylon titles applied to de Havilland D.H.I 06 Comet 4 jetliners and, later, BAC (Vickers) VC10s on international flights.
