The segregation of an inherited disorder and a genetic marker in families can be examined in order to test specific hypotheses about the possible involvement of a gene in the etiology of this disorder. This strategy was applied recently in a variety of situations including familial hypercholesterolemia, familial combined hyperlipidemia, abetalipoproteinemia and familial hypertriglyceridemia.
