Dust and sludge generated from the stainless steel making process at the Shunan Works are treated in the electric furnace to recover valuable metallic elements. In this study, in order to reduce the load of the electric furnace, experiments on the enrichment of valuable metallic elements and desulfurization of sludge were carried out by the hydrometallurgical method on a laboratory scale, In this method, sulfur and fluorine in waste solutions are removed as calcium compounds. By using CaCl_2 as a desulfurization reagent for some types of waste solution generated in the annealing and pickling lines, a high desulfurization ratio was obtained for the concentrated solutions. In the case of a dilute solution, pH adjustment and inoculation were effective in enhancing desulfurization and fluorine removal- Simultaneously, valuable metallic elements remained in the solutions and were enriched in the sludge.Using this method, the sulfur content in sludge can be reduced by 80-89 percent and the amount of sludge can be reduced by 7.5-14 percent. This method is considered to be highly effective as a preliminary treatment for sludge generated in the stainless steel making process.
