Routine toxicologic studies of the degradable neuromuscular-blocking drugs need to be complemented with studies based on the known chemical and pharmacologic properties of their metabolites. Of the metabolites of atracurium, the central nervous system stimulating effect of laudanosine is not prominent clinically, but the consequences of the concomitantly formed electrophilic acrylate esters remain unexplored.
