Designers and musicians have a lot in common: Both practice crafts that can be learned, studied, intellectualized, and critiqued ad infinitum. For either discipline to be elevated from the theoretical and effect an emotional connection with a viewer or a listener, though, an extra spark of an ineffable something else is necessary. Often referred to by the nebulous word "creativity," this spark is the quality that, despite the best efforts of our education systems, cannot be taught.
