With the support of a CAS project on Holocene environmental changes and their influences on the ecosystem of the Tibetan Plateau, a research group headed by Prof. Zhu Liping from the CAS Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research and their Japanese collaborators carried out a field survey in Puma Yumco area on the Tibetan Plateau from September 8 to 20. Lake Puma Yumco, which is situated in the south of Tibet Autonomous Region, occupies 148 square kilometers of water area with an average elevation of 5,030m above sea level. Some parts of the lake are as deep as 70 meters. Precipitation and melting glaciers are the major sources of the lake water. It is a virgin place for scientific exploration and an ideal site for studying the lake sedimentation and environmental changes on the Plateau.
