An analytical model of simply supported laminated composite beams embeddedwith magnetostrictive layers (Terfenol-D) is presented. The model is based on thehigher order shear deformation theory developed by Senthilnathanetal(Senthilnathan N R, Lim S P, Lee L H and Chow S T 1988Comput. Struct.1021129) which assumes a constant in-plane rotation tensor through the thicknessof the beams. The governing differential equations of the model are derived usingthe Hamilton principle. The velocity feedback control law is used to controlvibration suppression. The effect of material properties, lamination schemesand location of the magnetostrictive layers on vibration is examined.
