Extension of hospital management to the unit level has been effective in revelleving nurses of the responsibility for performing non-nursing activities, Studies, however, do not show consistent, significant increases in the amount of time nurses spend in direct care of patients following implementation of a unit management system. This is not likely to change until the managerial role expectations held for nurses by other hospital and medical personnel are transferred to the unit manager along with the non-nursing activities and nurses are rewarded for clinical rather than managerial performance.
