Rational approach to the use of diuretics in the pediatric cardiac patient requires initial attention to basic factors such as underlying hemodynamic state, presence of potentially remediable structural abnormalities, expected duration of treatment, as well as more general considerations such as bioavailability, level of renal function and ability to monitor baseline parameters of electrolytes and acid-base balance.
