The undersea cable units of Alcatel and ATT have signed an agreement to cooperate on the promotion, design, manufacture, supply and installation of Africa ONE, an undersea fibreoptic cable system that will ring the African continent. The project, which should be completed during 1999, has been devised by the International Telecommunications Union and the Pan-African telecommunications agencies RASCOM and PATU, as well as ATT and Alcatel. "We are pleased that Alcatel is joining us in this important effort to establish true global connectivity for Africa," commented William Carter, president of ATT Submarine Systems Inc. "Providing these resource-rich developing economies with access to the most sophisticated communications capability creates an unprecedented set of circumstances that promise exceptional growth for Africa."
