Based on studying the energy equation of a carbon/char particle, a critical ignition index that indicates a transitional point al which the reaction term in the energy equation start to play a noticeable role leading to ignition is obtained in the paper. Furthermore, the theoretical ignition temperature and ignition delay for a carbon/char particle is deduced. The experimental results are used to verify the theory. The method is both simple and accurate for analyzing the heterogeneous ignition of carbon/char particles.
