Chinese institutions and individuals interested in earth observation have been able to get free access to the data from moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometers (MODIS) onboard Earth-monitoring satellites since August 27, when a website for the MODIS-EOS platform at the National Facilities and Information Infrastructure for Science and Technology was established (http://www. nfiieos.cn) at the CAS Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research. MODIS is a key instrument onboard two large satellites of Earth observation: the Terra mission, launched in December 1999, and the Aqua mission, launched in May 2002.
