News They Could Have Used: Reader Bob Merrilees recalls this incident from his days working Clearance Delivery/Flight Data at Houston Intercontinental Airport (IAH), long before it would add the tagline 'George Bush'. A telephone caller frantically shouted, "AeroMexico Operations here; advise AMXxxx to add one thousand kilos 2,2001b)!" Merrilees immediately relayed this message to the tower controller, who replied, "He's just rotating. I'll tell him when he's up!" All eyes watched as the airplane used all 8,000ft (2,450m) of what was then Runway 14, barely missing the approach lights for Runway 32, and climbed out slowly...very slowly. Tower then called, advising the crew that company ops had advised adding 1,000kg to the takeoff weight. There followed a lengthy pause-and then the cryptic reply, "No sheet!"
