AbstractUsing minimum variance control theory, a controller is designed to reduce noise that contains a repetitive component of measurable time‐varying frequency. The particular application for which the controller is designed is the active cancellation of both road and engine noise in a vehicle passenger compartment. The controller is appropriate for this case because engine noise can be shown to be expressed as a summation of harmonically related sine waves whose frequency is determined by the engine rotational speed. An example is presented where a controller is developed for active noise control in a station‐wagon with road noise caused by striking a tyre and engine noise represented by the noise spectrum of a diesel engine. Computer simulations show that the developed controller significantly reduces the noise from both sour
