TheCrinum zeylanicumcomplex is divided into 3 species:C. zeylanicum(L.) L. s. str., C.kirküBak., andC. politifoliumWahlström sp. nov. The chromosome numbers found in East African material are 3n = 33, 2n = 22, and 2n = 30 respectively. Outside the region 2n = 22 is also found inC. zeylanicum.Each species has its own basic karyotype. TLC studies of alcaloid content revealed three different patterns.
