An overview of interstitial-free (I-F) steels described their capabilities in deep-drawing applications and their roles as energy savers due to elimination of annealing. "Armco's family of I-F steel, introduced to the market in 1970, was called at the time the most significant development in deep drawing steels in over 35 years," the editors of Metal Stamping wrote. "(Annealing) has become an area of increasing concern since most annealing lines are fed by natural gas. Because of its superior drawability, I-F steel can eliminate some of these costly operations and save energy."
