The installation of electrical equipment in areas where explosive gas and air mixtures and combustible dusts are present continues to increase. With this trend has come a need for far-more-complex requirements than previously imposed. The more-stringent requirements are primarily a result of the advances in technologies now being used throughout industry. The safe use of electrical equipment in explosive atmospheres can be ensured by adopting the following five essential steps: 1. Area Classification: Determine the type and extent of the explosion hazard. 2. Equipment Selection: Select equipment appropriate to the area classification as well as the environment. 3. Installation: Correctly install Ex equipment, following manufacturers' recommendations, certification, and standards requirements, to maintain the integrity of the explosion protection technique. 4. Suitable Maintenance: Perform maintenance of equipment and installation, e.g., flame paths of Ex "d" enclosures, cable glands, insulation, terminals, etc. In addition, note changes to processes or working environments that may alter the original classification. 5. Repair and Overhaul: Conduct repairs and overhauls in a manner that ensures that the original certification is not compromised. Refer to IEC 60079-19.
