A gas reaction process to treat solid ferrous scrap has been shown to successfully remove copper from various copper and iron charge mixtures hi both bench-scale and larger reactors. The reaction gases, air and HCl, are readily available. The reaction occurs at a moderate temperature of 800 deg C. The process gases have the potential to be recycled, and the copper chloride product may be in a potentially recoverable form. Further testing is planned with an increased HCl concentration and reaction times. This will increase the amount of copper removed from shredded scrap.
