A review of the methods with which to describe and classify the operation of irrigation conveyance systems is presented. Operations are first classified according to their orientation to water supply and water demand. Demand orientated systems are considered in detail. These systems are further classified according to method of control. Three methods of control identified are: upstream control, downstream control and dynamic regulation. Manual, automatic and computer controlled operations are described and examples of each are discussed.
