Plastic is the ideal material for toe Inferior trim of the passenger compartment because it combines the advantages of lower weight, allows large components to be produced in 3D, is of low cost and gives the possibility of incorporating additional functions, it is constantly evolving in ail areas: costs, mechanical characteristics and aesthetics. Furthermore the development of the new composites constantly accelerating the number of future applications in the car. The aspect and touch of visible surfaces is one of the areas of improvement. The skin has thus become mat, soft and grainy through various processes using urethane or thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO). Delphi will soon be offering a new covering called TPO Slush Cast which gives an appearance of quality but at a lower cost This is a pouring process by flushing. Its advantage, compared to the traditional polyvinyl chloride (PVC), is that it can be recycled to a great extent and moulded in colours thereby removing the need for a painting stage. Furthermore, due to its softness, it does not crack or craze when an airbag is deployed in cold weather In the pouring by flushing process, the TPO is poured in powder form into a heated mould During the rotation of the mould the TPO melts and conglomerates to form the covering. Therefore it is possible to vary the grain size, the graining or the density and to add decorations such as stitching, lettering or logos. The Delphi TPO Slush Cast covering should make its appearance in a large 4×4 in the North-American market in the year 2008.
