AbstractA mechanism of metal ion transfer for Ba2+and Sr2+at the liquid‐liquid interface, facilitated by polyethylene glycol 400 and based on complexation in aqueous and organic phases, is proposed. The interfacial half‐wave potential equations are deduced in terms both of the mechanism proposed and of the equilibria of distribution and dissociation in two phases and are verified experimentally. The effect of the polyoxyethylene structure on the selectivity of the facilitated transfer is discussed, and a useful way of improving the selectivity by selecting neutral carriers for practical analysis is sugges
