A crystal spectrograph is described which can be used to investigate laser-produced plasmas in the region of soft x rays at wavelengths of up to 60 Angstrom. The spectrograph uses an octadecyl hydrogen maleate crystal with a 2d of 63.5 Angstrom, combined with a very thin carbon filter (3000 Angstrom thick). As examples of its application, soft x-ray spectra in the range of 43-51 Angstrom from laser plasmas of Si and Cu are presented. A spectral resolution of lambda/Delta lambda=1100 is deduced from the spectra. (C) 1996 American Institute of Physics. References: 13
