The Japanese MGR sector offers little to be excited about, despitegrowing economic sentiment and a large, wealthy consumer base.In December 2013, Japanese supermarket sales fell by 0.8 y-o-yaccording to date from Bloomberg, the sixth time supermarketssuffered a decline in 2013. This meant that the Japanese supermarketsector faced a total sales fall of 0.7 in 2013 according to ourdata. Though many countries have experienced a similarly poorperformance in their supermarket sectors, high growth areas ofconvenience and discount stores have boosted overall MGR growth.However, a similar scenario in Japan has barely prevailed, with BMIestimating total MGR sales to have grown by just 0.4 in 2013 inlocal currency terms.
