Far away from the glitz and marketing surrounding new-product introductions toil the designers and builders who make these things possible. Where do they get their ideas? Ours and industry as a whole owe a large chunk of such advancements to research conducted by, and in cooperation with, the space program as fostered by NASA. In addition, a trove of manufacturing techniques, materials and methods owe their existence to spaceflight. To break the earth's gravity, to function in harsh conditions and return intact, sophisticated space vehicles require new materials, new tools and new way to design, shape and join components.
