The Iron Steel Society's first combined Ironmaking, Steelmaking and Electric Furnace Conference delivered the promise of a powerhouse event with a full house of more than 1,700 ISS members, guests and exhibitors, including 84 international attendees representing 20 countries. The well-attended event, held April 27-30 in Indianapolis, Inc., proved to be a draw for industry professionals with a location central to the largest assemblage of iron and steel producers in the United States. ISSTech 2003 officially opened with keynote speaker Thomas J. Usher, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of U.S. Steel Corp., who was named Steelmaker of the Year. Usher was introduced by long-time colleague Bob Heltzel, chief executive officer, Kenilworth Steel Co., Warren, Ohio, who used the ISS acronym to describe the honoree's qualities of "Integrity, Sincerity and Strength." Usher received the honor in recognition for his leadership in revitalizing the steel industry during a period of dramatic change both domestically and internationally. In his keynote address, he told the crowd of more than 500 that the Steelmaker of the Year Award was more meaningful because it came from his peers in the steel industry.
