When central started operations in 1949, the company situated its headquarters and maintenance base at Fort Worth's Meacham Field (FTW), located northwest of downtown. It was the airport used by all airlines serving the city at the time. Then, in April 1953, the City of Fort Worth opened a brand new commercial airport east of town. Amon Carter Field (ACF, later called Greater Southwest International Airport - GSW) boasted a spacious new terminal building featuring a two-story lobby adorned with a grand mural. The other airlines serving Meacham at the time (American, Braniff, Delta, Pioneer and Trans-Texas) transferred all of their scheduled operations to the new airport. Central transferred only some.
