Fairlawn Tool Die Co., Inc., Hamp-stead, MD, a production fabricator, assembler and packager with a full tool-and-die facility, provides formed, machined and welded metal parts for a variety of industries. The company produces many products with cold-rolled steel (CRS), which is susceptible to rust and corrosion. Looking for a safe and economical way to remove rust, Fairlawn, for the past year, has been successfully derusting its 1018-grade CRS with a water-based pH-neutral concentrate, PicoClean X-Rust from Pico Chemical Corp., Chicago Heights, IL. Founded in 1954 and boasting 100,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing space in two facilities, Fairlawn supplies food service, vending, transportation, retail and container industries. When rust occurs on parts, harsh chemical treatments such as acids or high-pH caustic solutions often are recommended to remove the reddish-brown coating. Fairlawn rejected these options due to safety reasons and the high expense of waste treatment, and opted for another common method: elbow grease.
