The crux of cancer pain management is that the individual needs of each patient must be met in terms of both the time and flexibility of the wide variety of treatment modalities that can be considered useful. The foregoing papers emphasize individualization of therapy; development of appropriate expertise to undertake specific treatment modalities; ongoing assessment of the intensity of the pain and its consequent effects on the patient's psyche and family members; and, lastly, always using what is expeditious, simple and economically advantageous.
