Reusable packaging is a growing concept in the food industry, just as it was in the automotive industry a few years ago. Since the early 1990s, reusables have become the norm in automotive manufacturing, and the industry has realized vast economic benefits including reduction of packaging costs, reduction of solid waste, superior part protection, and improved ergonomics for better productivity and lower labor costs. In today's food industry, the Efficient Consumer Response (ECR) and. Efficient Foodservice Response (EPR) initiatives are fostering cooperation among food manufacturers, distributors and retailers, helping to re-engineer the industry by reducing waste and increasing efficiency throughout the supply chain. Within those initiatives lies the timely incentive for promoting the cost-saving benefits of reusable packaging to the food industry. Adopting reusable plastic containers and pallets can help everyone work toward the 14.3 billion in dollar savings promised by EFR and can meet the industry's demand for quality, value-added foods.
