The aluminium industry deserves its reputation for being extremely successful in supporting safety and safe practices within the casthouse. Through Casthouse Safety Workshops and numerous publications and videos, the Aluminum Association and its members continuously strive for an incident-free production environment, through their education, training and sharing of life experiences and lessons. The developing trend in the industry is the focus on technology and automation to remove operators and workers from the high risk and high demand areas in the casthouse. These goals, however credible and achievable, are not without their challenges from technology, capital investment, human perception and a myriad of other hurdles. The goal of this article is to address several of these topics, and to present cases and examples where these challenges can be faced with a different perception.
