As Operation Iraqi Freedom rolled across the desert half a world away, the impacts of the war were far-reaching and touched many aspects of our lives here in the United States. This is especially true for employers of workers enlisted in the armed services who are deployed in active duty for an uncertain length of time. The United States has about a half-million men and women in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard. Of that number, 30 to 40 percent are reservists called onto active duty with some being first-time enlistees. Many employers have had or will have employees go into active duty with the various branches of service. Employers need to be aware of the laws that give returning service people rights with regard to their reemployment.
