A metalformer needed assistance in part production. Metal spinning didn't seem to work in this application. It began searching the stamping market looking for a company to produce a large part-69-in. OD, 39-in. ID and /'~ in. thick with a 2-in.-deep cone stamped in the middle-for the medical industry. Previously, this part was spun, but the spinning process could not consistently produce the required dimensions and tolerances. The difficulty resulted in an inefficient fabrication process. Most job shops with the capability to produce this part declined due to small batch quantities. But Peterson Mfg. Co. (PMC), Plainfield, IL, experienced in tool building, suggested a nitrogen cushion designed into the die as a solution. PMC was on a tight schedule and agreed to expedite the idea. PMC fabricated the die in 18 weeks, significantly less time than the average job-shop lead time for such a solution, 28 to 30 weeks.
