The United States Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) and the Applied Research Laboratories of the University of Texas at Austin (ARL:UT) are jointly developing a Hydrographic Data Recording System. The purpose of this proof-of-concept activity is to exploit and enhance the existing capabilities of U.S. Navy surface ships as platforms of opportunity for data acquisition. The Hydrographic Data Recording System (HDRS) utilises the existing functionality of the AN/UQN-4 sonar set and integrates the depth data with GPS time and position tags. The data are stored on high density media in a standard format. Current HDRS development efforts are aimed at the construction of a portable "suitcase" model that could be fielded at the discretion of the collecting agency to satisfy data acquisition requirements. The concept of a portable digital sounder is a viable method for maximizing data collection resources.
