India's 1m tpy bulk ferro-alloys industry has been unnerved by a high-level recommendation to cut import duties, which it fears will expose the industry to overseas producers with lower costs. An expert committee appointed by the government to look at duties across all imports has suggested that during the 2003-2004 budget, implemented from April, the peak level of customs duty should be reduced from the present 30 percent to 25 percent. If this is implemented, then the import duty on ferro-alloys could be reduced from the current 25 percent to 20 percent.
