The rates of formation of hydrates of H3Oplus;in the reactionsH3Oplus;lpar;H2Orpar;nminus;1plus;H2Oplus;Mlrarr2;H3Oplus;lpar;H2Orpar;nplus;M, nthinsp;equals;thinsp;1, 2, 3,were studied using drift tube techniques. Experiments were performed at 337deg;K with mixtures of 0.5percnt; to 1.8percnt; partial pressure of water in argon at total pressures from 0.6 to 3.0 torr. Rate constants for the forward reactions decreased slowly with increasingEthinsp;sol;thinsp;P0in the range 4ndash;30 V cmminus;1middot;torrminus;1. Values fork1, k2,andk3at 337deg;K were 6thinsp;times;thinsp;10minus;28, 6thinsp;times;thinsp;10minus;28, and 2thinsp;times;thinsp;10minus;28cm6/sec. Limits were estimated for the reverse reactions. Mobilities of the cluster sequence from H3Oplus;to H9O4plus;were almost independent ofEthinsp;sol;thinsp;Pin the range studied, with zerohyphen;field values of 3.0, 2.5, 2.2, and 2.0 cm2Vminus;1middot;secminus;1in close agreement with the polarizationhyphen;limit Langevin theory.
