Arbed SA of Luxembourg appears to be playing the field with electric furnace suppliers. The company recently brought on stream new EAFs from different suppliers at two beam blank plants. Arbed commissioned a new twin shell DC furnace at its Profile Arbed Differdange plant, some 20 km southeast of the city of Luxembourg, late last year. The EAF was supplied by Mannesmann Demag Huttentechnik. (Besides the new EAF, Differdange also operates the first near net shape beam blank caster in Europe.) In mid May, Arbed began making beam blanks at its new melting/casting complex at Stahlwerk Tiring GmbH, Germany. The complex has a 120 metric ton DC EAF, a 120 metric ton ladle furnace and afour strand beam blank caster. A consortium of Voest-Alpine Industrie-anlagenbau and Deutsche Voest-Alpine Industrieanlagenbau was the supplier.
