The characters used for generic delimitation in Valerianaceae are discussed, and the South American generaAretiastrum, Astrephia, Belonanthus, Phuodendron, Phyllactis, andStangeaare included in the genusValeriana. Valerianasubgen.Phyllactisis emended to comprise all South American species with reduced number of anther locules.
