Data from an intensive capture-recapture study of colour- ringedbreeders in a major colony during 1974-1978, and from recoveries ofBlack Guillemots Cepphus grylle ringed in 1963-1996, were used toestimate first-year and adult survival with modern software. The twosources of data were in agreement on adult survival, which was esti-mated at 0.86. First-year survival, estimated only from ringingrecoveries, was 0.49; this is the first direct esti- mate of thisdifficult parameter for the Black Guillemot.
