Place typical proximity sensors- plastic face and nickel-plated brass body-anywhere in the vicinity of weld slag and the slag will stick to the sensor body and possibly burn through the face. For sensoring in automated-welding applications, HTM Electronics, Niagara Falls, NY, used METAL-FORM'05 to launch its MetalHead sensors with Splatter-Guard. These sensors have a stainless-steel body, face and mounting hardware, and come coated with PTFE (Teflon) material. Weld slag slides right off, says the firm, and the sensors will last up to six times longer than conventional sensors in automated welding applications. The 8-mm-dia. model has a sensing range of 2 mm; the 12-mm-dia. sensor has a 4-mm sensing range. They operate from 10 to 30 v DC and come in NPN, PNP or DC two-wire models.
