摘要

A scanning electron microscope (SEM) has been used in the study of the behavior of metal additives in solid rocket propellants. The problem was studied in three parts: (1) preignition phenomena including agglomeration, (2) single particle ignition and combustion, and (3) behavior of the metals during solid propellant combustion, Agglomeration experiments were performed with loose metal particles using a variety of high-heating rate techniques, including a high energy continuous-wave CO2laser. Single particle combustion studies were performed using both a Nd-glass laser and a xenon flash discharge tube as ignition devices. Combustion studies of metal-loaded propellants were performed in a high pressure window bomb permitting high magnification, high speed photography and sample quenching. In all three experiments metal particles were quenched during various stages of the process and surface characteristics were studied with the SEM. Interpretation of the SEM photomicrographs and information from motion picture photography have provided a qualitative description of the agglomeration and burning of aluminum and beryllium particles in solid propellants.
