Acetolyzed exines ofFagus sylvaticapollen partially extracted with hot 2-aminoethanol change from a uniform homogeneous substructure to a heterogeneous granular substructure in which the granules are interconnected in a lattice. At first the granules are arranged around polygonal openings. With further extraction, larger compound polygons result and, as granules are detached, the polygons become open at the surface. The granules are spheroidal or ellipsoidal with a diameter of 10 nm or with major and minor axes of 7 and 15 nm. The size and arrangement of granules are similar to that observed in extracted pollen ofLilium tongiflorum.
