The theme of the 2001 symposium of the mineralogical society of Japan is silica minerals. Silica minerals are important in earth sciences and materials science. We chose mineral species as the symposium theme because many fields of mineralogists can participate in discussion. The research fields related to the symposium are mineralogy, earth and planetary sciences, materials science, environmental sciences and biology.
