Metal Products (EMP), Jackson, Wl, provides short-run sheetmetal fabrication and prototyping services. In 2002, EMP purchased an Amada Gemini laser cutter. By 2006, EMP officials sought to modernize CAM software on the laser cutter to eliminate laser-head crashes and improve and automate nesting capability. "We were producing nests manually and the existing software did not allow for auto-fixing of problem CAD files," says Mike Fischer, EMP laser operations manager. "Also, because the software's auto-sequencing did not work properly, it cost us an average of 10 min./part to manually sequence."
